The One, The Only Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3In a previous blog, we mentioned how important it is to test fish oils at certified marine oil testing facilities or the vitamin results could be all over the place and highly inaccurate.

Another marker of a vitamin testing facility’s inability to test nutrients in marine oils is finding vitamins that do not exist or conversely not finding vitamins that do exist. For example cod liver oil only contains vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). This is the form of vitamin D that our bodies make when exposed to sunlight and is the ideal form for you to ingest especially if you spend a lot of time indoors or live in northern climates where sunshine is lacking during certain times of the year. One of the reasons cod liver oil is so effective is the high amounts of vitamin D3 it contains. As a food source of there are no higher levels of vitamin D3 than what is found in cold water fish and cod liver oil ranks at the top of that list.

Phantom Vitamin D

What time is it when a testing facility finds vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) in cod liver oil? Time to find a new testing facility! Vitamin D2 is a plant based form of vitamin D. It simply does not show up in cod liver oil in any measurable amounts. And that is a good thing because vitamin D2 is not the form of vitamin D that you want to ingest in any large quantities. Vitamin D2 takes a different pathway in our bodies and does not absorb as well into our vitamin D3 receptors. Excess vitamin D2 running around in your blood stream can be toxic. Any testing facility that finds vitamin D2 in cod liver oil is not a reputable lab and their results should be discounted across the board.

What’s in Your Cod Liver Oil?

To ensure you are getting the most accurate information from your cod liver oil producer make sure all of the vitamin D in your oil is vitamin D3. If the producer shows levels of vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 definitely subtract the vitamin D2 results and then question the validity of the vitamin D3 results. EVCLO contains the highest levels of naturally occurring vitamin D3 of any cod liver oil on the market. When you take EVCLO you can be assured you are getting all of the nutrients just as they are in the liver of a living codfish.
